THEATER EMORY PRESENTS SHAKESPEARIAN TRAGEDY “KING LEAR”

Theater Emory presents the monumental Shakespearian tragedy “King Lear” from Nov. 10 to 20, 2005. As King Lear abdicates his throne and chooses how to divide his kingdom, everyone in his world must struggle between human decency and animal instinct in a storm of political corruption, madness and betrayal. Directed by and featuring critically acclaimed actor and Emory faculty member Tim McDonough, “King Lear” is performed at the Mary Gray Munroe Theater, Dobbs University Center, 605 Asbury Circle, Emory University at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 to 12 and 17 to 19 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13, 19 and 20. For tickets and information, the public may call 404-727-5050 or visit www.arts.emory.edu. For Theater Emory information, visit www.theater.emory.edu.
Produced in a “process-to-play” style, this show allows audiences a rare glimpse into how a theatrical production is created. “Some of theater’s greatest moments happen in the rehearsal: inspired impulses and great performances that may never again be duplicated in the performance. I have often wished that the general public could see some of what transpires in rehearsal,” says McDonough. He adds, “This King Lear production’s simple means and its mix of contemporary and period elements are very much in the spirit of Shakespeare’s original productions.” The cast also includes Emory faculty member John Ammerman, Tess Malis Kincaid, Marshall Marden and a host of Emory students. Set and costume design for the production is by Leslie Taylor, lighting design is by H. Bart McGeehon and sound design is by Judy Zanotti.
General admission tickets are $15; $12 for Emory faculty, staff, and discount groups; and $6 for Emory students. The Nov. 11 performance is the Pay-What-You-Can Performance (pay what you can tickets are sold at the door and are based on availability). Parking is available in Peavine and Fishburne Visitor Parking Decks.
