Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, Emory Coca-Cola Artist in Residence Oct. 17-27

Two-time Grammy Award winner Richard Stoltzman, the preeminent jazz, classical, and new music clarinet player who is credited with expanding the range of clarinet repertoire will be in Atlanta performing and teaching as an Emory Coca-Cola Artist in Residence from Oct. 17-22, 2007. Nebraska-born Stoltzman’s unique style of playing the clarinet has earned him an international reputation that has opened up possibilities for the instrument no one could have predicted. He gave the first clarinet recitals in the histories of both the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall and, in 1986, he became the first wind player to be awarded the Avery Fisher Prize. This season he was awarded the prestigious Sanford Medal by the Yale School of Music where he had received his master of music degree.

During his busy residency Stoltzman’s evenings will be filled with public concerts as he performs an Emory Chamber Music Society (ECMSA) concert with stellar collaborators Christopher Rex, Cecylia Arzewski, Laura Gordy and the Vega String Quartet, and concerts with Emory Wind Ensemble, Emory Symphony Orchestra, Emory Concert Choir and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. During the day Stoltzman will visit classes and lead a lecture/demonstration and a masterclass that are both free and open for public observation.

Stoltzman begins his Emory residency on Wednesday, October 17 at 8 p.m. in a performance with the Emory Wind Ensemble directed by Scott Stewart. This free concert features a diverse program including composer Scott McAllister’s “Black Dog,” a classical clarinet concerto infused with the rock energy of Led Zeppelin. On Monday, October 22 at 8 p.m. Stoltzman will perform with the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony also directed by Scott Stewart to perform “wundeliguhi (the darkening land)” composed by Emory director of orchestral studies, Richard Prior.

Of Stoltzman’s residency, Scott Stewart said: “"One of the goals we have at Emory is to continually surround our students with the world's great artists, and Richard Stoltzman, as the world's best known clarinetist, is certainly in this category.  He is at the top of his game musically and combines a fantastic variety of music-making all over the world with effective teaching.  He is a friendly, down-to-earth, non-diva type of guy, which is exactly the package we seek in our Coca-Cola Artists-in-Residence.”

Stoltzman will join the members of the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta for a free Noontime Series concert on Friday, October 19 featuring music by Beethoven, Bartók, and Poulenc. He will also be joined by violinist Cecylia Arzewski, cellist Christopher Rex, pianist Laura Gordy, and the Vega String Quartet for an ECMSA Emerson Series Concert on Sunday, October 21 at 4 p.m. in a program of music that includes Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time” and Mozart’s “Clarinet Quintet.” For tickets or additional information contact the Arts at Emory box office at 404-727-5050, or www.arts.emory.edu.
