“STIR: Emory’s Annual Student Arts Festival” Has Rock, Jazz, Graffiti, and More
“STIR: Emory’s Annual Student Arts Festival,” an innovative event that has become a popular tradition enters its fourth year with a range of performances and activities from music by the Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship (Will is an Emory alum) and local rockers the Silent Kids to a hands on service project for the Foundation for Hospital Art and opportunities to learn about other Atlanta-based arts organizations. At STIR students and guests experience all of Emory’s arts disciplines (theater, music, visual art, dance, film, and creative writing) and those who want to can create art too. STIR is Wednesday, October 17, 2007, from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. in the heart of Emory’s campus in and around Asbury Circle and the Dobbs University Center. The festival is free to the public. STIR is organized by the Student Arts Council and the Arts at Emory, and is sponsored by Emory’s Wonderful Wednesdays; the Dobbs University Center; Binder’s Art Supplies and Frames; the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts; the departments of theater studies, film studies, art history and music and the dance and visual art programs.
STIR’s student performers will include an improv comedy troupe, a bhangra dance team, a break-dancing crew, a musical theater group, spoken word artists, a step team and more (see full list on next page). A Capella groups will grace the festival with harmonious tunes throughout the day. Local indie rock band, the Silent Kids, will perform a live concert in the afternoon. The Will Scruggs Jazz Fellowship will give a moonlight concert serving as the festival’s finale. Between performances, the atmosphere will be filled with a wide-range of music, courtesy of Emory radio station, WMRE.
For those who love hands on art making, a “Create Your Own Art” station will have paint, brushes, canvas, color pencils, chalk, clay, markers, crayons, drawing paper for festival guests to use while supplies last. Guests can make and immediately display their screen-printed t-shirts (shirts available for the first 100 guests), sculpture, painting, drawing, sketches and stencil work. For those who enjoy a group art project, a graffiti wall and spray paint will be available. Contests with great prizes such as tickets to local theater and gift cards for the winners will include competitions in haiku/poetry chalking, sidewalk chalk drawings, two-dimensional paintings, two-dimensional drawings/sketches, and a dance contest. For those who would rather someone else make art for them, there will be student artists providing face-painting and caricatures.
A special activity at this year’s festival is The Foundation for Hospital Art service project inside Dobbs University Center’s from noon until 2 p.m. The Student Arts Council and Volunteer Emory partner to touch up works of art destined for international hospitals and medical facilities that might not otherwise have the resources to bring soothing, vibrant images into their medical facilities. The Foundation for Hospital Art, is a non-profit organization based in Roswell, Georgia that is dedicated to softening hospital environments with colorful paintings, wall murals, and ceiling tiles. While supplies last, project participants complete pre-drawn, color-coded designs on canvases.
Festival visitor parking is free after 4:00 p.m. in the Fishburne Deck (next door to the Schwartz Center), Lowergate South Deck (behind Law School), and Peavine Deck (on Fraternity Row, across from the Woodruff PE Center).
