“Young Acts” Kicks Off 2006-2007 Theater Emory Season of Youth
Theater Emory’s 2006-2007 season focusing on the joys and trials of youth opens with “Young Acts,” two programs of one-act plays performed in repertory (Sept. 28-Oct. 7, 2006; tickets $15; $12 for discount category members). “Theater is the perfect medium for exploring how young people invent and accept scripts and characters, and how they learn to perform in the various aspects of their lives,” says Theater Emory’s new artistic director, Tim McDonough. “Our intent is that these one-act plays should talk to each other. We invite you to make your own connections about what the stories and their characters have in common.” These performances feature the varied works of a variety of renowned and cutting-edge playwrights, including Tennessee Williams, Romulus Linney, Adam Rapp, Nick Dear and José Rivera. For tickets and information, the public can call 404-727-5050 or visit www.arts.emory.edu.
The cast includes professionals John Curran, Sabrena Farmer and Tafee Patterson, as well as a host of Emory students. Regarding the cast, McDonough adds that “these young characters are so under-defined, so much in flux, with so many disparate and contradictory urges, which suggests that the acting in ‘Young Acts’ and in other shows this season should be edgy, jagged, unpredictable, restless, full of confusion and inner conflict.”
The plays will be directed by Emory faculty members Janice Akers, John Ammerman, Tim McDonough, Lisa Paulsen and Leslie Taylor, as well as Atlanta actor/director Jim Donadio and Emory alumnus Matt Huff. Set design is by William Moore, light and sound design is by Robert Turner and Judy Zanotti, and costume design is by Marianne Martin and Rosalind Staib. “Young Acts” will be performed at the Mary Gray Munroe Theater, Dobbs University Center, 605 Asbury Circle, Emory University. “Young Acts” Program A takes place on Sept. 29 and Oct. 4 and 6 at 7 p.m. and on Oct. 1 and 7 at 2 p.m. “Young Acts” Program B is on Sept. 28 and 30 and October 5 and 7 at 7 p.m. and on Oct. 6 at 10 p.m (tickets are $15, discount category members $12).
The Pay-What-You-Can Performance for “Young Acts” Program A is October 4; for “Young Acts” Program B, it is October 5. Pay-What-You-Can tickets can be purchased only at the door and are subject to availability. Advance tickets for the performance can be purchased at the regular price.
