ETHOS PERCUSSION GROUP PERFORMS AT THE SCHWARTZ CENTER IN OCTOBER
Ethos Percussion Group, an innovative percussion ensemble that draws
on an eclectic battery of instruments from around the globe, performs
at the Schwartz Center, Emory University, Oct. 28, 2005, 8 p.m. ($10;
discount category members, $5; Emory students, free). Joining Ethos
for this performance are special guests Pandit Samir Chatterjee, tabla;
Pandit Ramesh Misra, sarengi; and Emory University Concert Choir with
Eric Nelson, conductor. Ethos’s two-part program starts with “The
Masters of Indian Music: From Bombay to the Battery,” an exploration
with Indian classical percussion and strings that brings together ancient
and modern sounds. The program concludes with the Emory Concert Choir
and Ethos performing “Missa Luba,” a mass in Congolese (Zairean)
style that was arranged by Guido Haazen and the African singers with
whom he worked. The drums in the “Missa Luba,” especially
tom-toms, provide the rhythmic canvas upon which a collective improvisation
develops in the call-and-response style. A dessert reception with Ethos
after the concert will give the audience the opportunity to meet the
artists. For tickets or more information, call 404-727-5050 or go to
www.arts.emory.edu.
In addition to their performance, as 2006 Emory Coca-Cola Artists-in-Residence,
Ethos will provide a lecture/demonstration in the Schwartz Center (Oct.
27, 2005, 2:30 p.m.; free and open to the public). The percussion group
will also lead a drum circle (Oct. 27, 7:30 p.m.) and a percussion clinic
(Oct. 28). Call 404-727-5050 in October for drum circle and percussion
clinic details, including time and location.
