COMMUNITY ARTS SEASON KICK-OFF – THE CREATIVITY & ARTS SOIREE!
WITH GRAFFITI WALL, CHALKFEST, ARTIST DEMOS AND MORE
The Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts (CCA) invites everyone to celebrate their own creativity and take a peek behind the scenes at the arts season during the “2nd Annual Creativity & Arts Soiree,” Sept. 10, 2009 from 4–9 p.m. in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, 1700 N. Decatur Rd., Atlanta, 30322. Atlanta arts enthusiasts, artists and members of Emory’s Friends groups in the arts come together for this community-wide event.
Wander through the Schwartz Center and discover presentations by artists and scholars from Emory’s music, visual arts and film studies departments; creative writing and dance programs; and Theater Emory. Visitors can meet representatives from the Carlos Museum, Emory Libraries and student arts groups. Guests can view paintings by Emory alumna Susan Stubbs Robert while sampling light refreshments provided by local restaurants and bakeries, including cupcakes from Desserts by Latrell .
This preview of the 2009-2010 arts season offers open rehearsals, performances and demonstrations including an open rehearsal with the Emory Symphony Orchestra. Those wishing to test their creativity can participate in sketching casts of works classical and archaic sculpture on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and floral still life arrangements donated by Vann Jernigan and Maud Baker Flower and Gifts, as well as poetry and graffiti walls and a cut-paper-on-canvas collage activity sponsored by Sam Flax stores. Associate Professor and CCA project grant recipient Cheryl Crowley will lead demonstrations in Chinese brush painting.
Last year 350 guests attended the Soiree when the CCA was launched. “To start the season in the spirited, imaginative way that’s a hallmark of the arts, we welcome everyone to the Soiree. This new tradition is a jumping off point for the community to engage an array of artists, dive into Emory’s latest creative research and discover events by our ensembles and artists,” says Leslie Taylor, Executive Director of the Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts.
The Arts at Emory Box Office windows will be open during the Soiree for all patrons to purchase tickets to season events before they go on sale to the public on Sept. 11 (single tickets for Emory employees, students and Friends go on sale Sept. 9). Friends members (including those who join at the Soiree) will have access to the exclusive “Friends Lounge” and its special culinary delights. To join a Friends group, go online to www.emory.edu/give. For additional information or to volunteer at the Soiree, call 404-712-9894 or email creativity@emory.edu.
