Color and Sound Explored in Concert and Exhibition Featuring Atlanta-based Artist Lori-Gene
Atlanta-based visual artist Lori-Gene creates art on stage during “Color: A Spectrum of Sound,” a free concert featuring the Emory Wind Ensemble at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, Emerson Concert Hall, on Friday, April 13, 2007 at 8 p.m. Under the direction of Scott Stewart, Emory’s director of wind studies, the ensemble will perform Dello Joio’s “Scenes from the Louvre” and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Also on the program is a new work, “Mr. Atlas,” by Andrew Rindfleisch co-commissioned by Georgia State University. During this piece, Lori-Gene will be on stage sketching, as a videographer films her work and projects the images directly onto a screen behind the musicians. A reception follows the concert. For additional information call 404-727-5050 or visit www.arts.emory.edu.
Lori-Gene’s says she “combines the phenomena of motion, sound, and sight to create an image of the passion that is heard and felt through music.” She frequently draws in the midst of musicians. “Through a unique empathy, I merge with musician and instrument, feeling them become the music they play…I connect with an ineffable quality present in all the arts…line, form and color are as much properties of sound as of visual art. The result is something entirely new, a drawing or painting that the viewer can hear as well as see.”
An exhibition of Lori-Gene’s works entitled, “Color: A Spectrum of Sound - Music as Metaphor in the Visual Arts,” will be on display in the Schatten Gallery of Emory University’s Woodruff Library beginning with an opening reception from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wed., April 11, 2007, and continuing through May 16, 2007. In addition to Lori-Gene’s widely exhibited music-based drawings, the show will include the first-ever public exhibition of oil paintings by the artist. An artist talk will be presented on Sun., April 22, at 4:00 p.m. in the Schatten Gallery. The exhibition and artist talk are free and open to the public.
Lori-Gene has exhibited throughout the United States, in Europe, Scandinavia and Central Asia. She served on the faculty at Georgia Perimeter College with distinction, earning tenure in 2001. She left that position to pursue studio art full-time in 2003. Her educational outreach continues through her drawing workshops, performances, and lectures locally, nationally and internationally, and she is often accompanied by prerecorded or live music. Bill Brown, chair of the Emory Visual Arts Program, says that “Lori-Gene brings a new twist to the idea of performance art. Opportunities to watch visual artists create their work are rare…Both art and music lovers are in for a treat.” This collaboration with Dr. Stewart and the Emory Wind Ensemble is supported by the Emory College Joint Activities Committee.
