Theater Emory's "The Time of Your Life" Closes Season Focused on Youth
Theater Emory will conclude its 2006-2007 season focused on youth with William Saroyan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Time of Your Life” (April 19-29, 2007; tickets $15; $12 for discount category members). A hit on Broadway when it first opened in 1939, this energetic ensemble piece centers on a colorful cast of characters as they congregate in a San Francisco saloon. There is a talented African American piano player, a dancer who wants to be a comedian but isn’t funny, a fanatic pinball player, a pair of lovers on the brink of despair and a heartbroken young woman down on her luck. Tim McDonough, Theater Emory’s Artistic Director, describes the play as stylistically young and innovative for its day. McDonough also enjoys the youthful optimism in “The Time of Your Life”. “Out of the Depression,” reflects McDonough, “the nation was being reborn, with a hope for the future that must have felt young even in older hearts.” This production is a Theater Emory directorial debut for Georgia Shakespeare’s Artistic Director, Richard Garner. “Saroyan is an ever youthful idealist,” notes Garner, “we hope to truly succeed in making this the time of our life.” For tickets and information, the public can call 404-727-5050 to visit www.arts.emory.edu.
The cast of “The Time of Your Life” includes professionals Robin Bloodworth, James Donadio, Jon Hayden, Marc McPherson, Allen O’Reilly, Mary Lynn Owen, Barry Stoltze and Steve Westdahl, as well as a host of Emory students. “This is a play that actors have a passion for,” says Garner. “It is one of the best ensemble pieces because all of these characters play out their stories.” When it comes to directing at Theater Emory, Garner adds, “I love working with college students. They are learning their craft, they are open and ready to try things, they are filled with a sense of discovery. Like many of the characters in the play, some are rearing to take on the world.”
Set design is by Kat Conley, costume design is by English Benning. Light and sound design are by Judy Zanotti. “The Time of Your Life” will be performed at the Mary Gray Munroe Theater, Dobbs University Center, 605 Asbury Circle, Emory University. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. April 19-21 and 25-28 and at 2 p.m. April 22 and 29 (tickets are $15, discount category members $12). The Pay-What-You-Can-Performance for “The Time of Your Life” is April 25. Pay-What-You-Can tickets can be purchased at the door only and are subject to availability. Advance tickets for the performance can be purchased at the regular price. Parking is available in Fishburne and Peavine parking decks. For Theater Emory information, visit www.arts.emory.edu.
