Film Composer Bruce Broughton’s Visit to Emory an Interdisciplinary Windfall

Emory University’s undergraduate arts programs will receive a rare treat in February, when Bruce Broughton, the versatile Academy-Award and Emmy-Award winning composer, visits Emory Monday, Feb. 26 through Thursday, March 1, 2007. During this visit Broughton will teach music and film classes, attend several ensemble rehearsals and appear in concert with the Emory Wind Ensemble for a program featuring his own compositions.

Broughton has written music for a multitude of genres, including film, television, video games and orchestral scores. He has received 23 Emmy nominations and won a record 10, the latest for his score to HBO’s “Warm Springs.” His first major film score for the movie “Silverado,” earned him an Oscar nomination. Always breaking boundaries, his score for “Heart of Darkness” was the first ever composed for a video game. Film credits include “The Rescuers Down Under,” “Krippendorf’s Tribe” and “Lost in Space,” while major television credits include “Tiny Toon Adventures” and “Dallas,” both Emmy-Award winners. This Grammy-Award nominee is also an accomplished conductor and his many talents will be put to full use during his Emory visit.

Scott Stewart, director of wind studies at Emory, said that Broughton’s “multi-faceted talents are perfect for Emory’s integrated academic and performing-based programs in both Music and Film Studies, so he seemed a natural fit for the Coca-Cola Artists-in-Residence program.” During his visit, Broughton will make appearances in two classes, Film Music and Music Composition, to discuss his career, composing, and working in the film/television business. On Wednesday, Feb. 28 the Emory Wind Ensemble will perform a free concert featuring some of Broughton’s compositions, including themes from “Silverado” and “The Three Musketeers.” Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy” rounds out the program. Broughton will also coach high school musicians during an open rehearsal with the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and will participate in a meet-and-greet on Monday, Feb. 26 from noon until 1 p.m. For more information on the composer’s activities and open rehearsals, please contact the Arts at Emory Box Office at 404.727.5050, or visit www.arts.emory.edu.
