Tango Concert to feature Osvaldo Barrios, the Emory Tango Ensemble and Tangueros Emory on Feb. 21, 2007

Renowned bandoneón (an accordion considered essential to tango music) player Osvaldo Barrios and his musical collaborators from Buenos Aires, Pablo Aslan, bass, and Ruben Stefano, piano, will perform an evening of tango music and dance with Emory string, piano and dance artists from Tangueros Emory and the Emory Tango Ensemble. The concert is February 21, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, Emerson Concert Hall. For more information contact the Arts at Emory Box Office at 404-727-5050 or visit the website at www.arts.emory.edu. The evening includes both traditional tango works such as “Nostalgias” and newer works such as “Tango Nuevo.” Osvaldo Barrios appears as part of the Emory Coca-Cola Artist-in-Residence Series.

Osvaldo Barrios was born in Buenos Aires and has completely dedicated himself to playing his musical instrument, the bandoneón. He began his performance career with well-known tango orchestras in Buenos Aires before he immigrated to the United States. He has lived in Los Angeles and Miami, and he currently lives in the Atlanta area. He has accompanied such legendary tango singers as Libertad Lamarque, Mariano Mores, Roberto Goyeneche and Horacio Devel. In addition to establishing himself in Hollywood as a musician for the motion picture industry, Barrios has played for a number of tango shows, including Diego Torres and Miguel Angel Zotto.

Tangueros Emory is an Emory College organization for students and Emory community members. Tangueros’ mission is to study and teach Argentine tango music and dance and to promote Argentine history and culture. Kristin Wendland, a senior lecturer in the department of music at Emory University, is the faculty advisor for the group. Wendland’s current research interests include the music and dance of the Argentine tango and music theory pedagogy. Wendland received a Fulbright Lecture and Research grant in 2005, where she taught a seminar in Schenkerian analysis at the Universidad Católica Argentina in Buenos Aires and pursued her research in the music of the Argentine tango. Professor Wendland said of Osvaldo that “we are extremely fortunate to have a native Argentine bandóneonist living right here in the Atlanta area. Osvaldo has the soul of a true tanguero, whose pure and simple style captures the heart-felt essence of tango music.”
